Launch: Speed — Part One, and Other Updates

Speed. The highly undervalued feature that is a tough sell to managers everywhere. It’s feature you can’t see it, but oh can you feel it.

Now we’ll be honest, Timely has been fast-ish, but it hasn’t been Usain Bolt fast. That is about to start changing.

Today we’re introducing our all-new week view, rebuilt from the ground up in React. It had previously been built in Angular and had been with us since the very beginning.

Hiring a remote team?

An average manager is used to keeping an eye on things. At first, the request to source and hire remote talent won’t click. They’ll devise a way to bird-watch employees from another time zone. They shuffle to the whiteboard and sketch the grand plan: Send remote workers iPad, install on the wall, Skype all day, max zoom, include a handfan to simulate breath down their neck and back. Fortunately for me, a handfan never arrived in Philadelphia from my Timely team in Oslo, nor did one come for any of our other teammates across three continents, five time zones and six countries.

Launch: The All-New Timely for iPhone & iPad

This has been a big undertaking for us. The new version has literally gotten a big re-write and now consists of 80% less code, even though it’s on iPhone and iPad now. That’s a lot of optimised code, which means the app is now way, way faster and a lot easier for us to build upon. Second, the old app tried to be a little bit too fancy, if you will, in some areas. This new design is all about focus and clarity. Here are some the new things.

The New Company View

When we started building Timely, we took a deliberate choice to focus first on making the experience for the freelancer — for the individual — our top priority. We did that because it’s very important for us that our real users — the people that log hours every day — love to use Timely, and not just the managers that need to get data out.

That’s why we’ve only had a solo view on the calendar for so long, but that finally changes today.

The New Daily Notification

If there is one thing that we’ve learned since launching Timely, it’s that the more often you log hours, the more accurate the time becomes. Obvious stuff, I know. But when so many of us log hours once a month or once a week, there’s a real problem.

Announcing New, Simpler Pricing

When we launched Timely, we based pricing on five different plans that had specific limits on projects and users. To go from one plan to the next could be a fairly big jump if you only needed one more user or project.

It worked, but it encouraged you to have less projects, which wasn’t good. It also made it feel bad when you scaled. All in all, not ideal.

Today we’re finally scrapping all that and launching one simple price: $14 per user per month. That’s it. No limits on projects or users or anything – just one simple price.
